Make Money Giving Seminars

Make Good Money Giving Seminars

Do you have a skill that is in demand? Are you considering setting up a service business to offer your skill to the world? Before you start on that business plan, stop and think about giving seminars instead. If you like people and can talk knowledgeably about a hot topic, you can make more money conducting seminars than actually performing the service.

But is the seminar business for you? This article will help you to investigate that question.

Who Should Consider the Seminar Business?

Anyone with a skill. We aren’t talking about book learning here either. If you want people to pay you, you better have real world experience in the subject. And be good at what you do. People want to learn from winners.

Topics that Make Good Seminar Classes

There is no way we could list all the possible seminar topics in this article. But here is how to figure out if your skill would make a good seminar topic: Pick a subject that other people consider hard. This can be anything from computer programs to crafts, to business opportunities.

Your skill should also have a high perceived value. No one is going to pay for a class on car washing. Your topic should be something that can help your students earn more money, save them time, or make them look good either personally or professionally - a tangible benefit. Will your skill do any of these things?

Your Target Market

You have two choices when it comes to seminars. You can market your services to regular people or to the corporate world. The corporate world (in general) pays more. If you bring your seminar to the company’s place of business, you don’t have to spend the extra money to rent a hall. On the other hand you will most likely have to offer more support services—and your topic must focus on something that will help the company’s bottom line.

There is more flexibility when you work with the public. You can offer a wider range of classes, but unless you work with an adult school or similar venue, you will have to pay for the seminar hall up front. Your clients will be coming to your seminar because they want to be there, but they will pay less than the corporate world.

Each type of seminar business has its pros and cons. Choose the one that fits your skill, and your personality.

How to Test Out the Seminar Business

Educate yourself
Read how-to books from people who are successful at giving seminars. Attend a few seminars yourself so you can see how they run. You should know what you are doing before asking for money.

Practice
No one wants to hire an inexperienced speaker. Here is how you gain experience:

  1. If you don’t have experience speaking in public (or aren’t very good at it) join your local Toastmaster’s. This club will help you refine your public speaking, and give you some much needed practice.
  2. Call your local library, chamber of commerce, or Small Business Association and offer to teach a few free seminars. This will help you figure out if you like giving seminars before you spend a lot of your money and time. These groups are generally in need of speakers.

Once you do all of this, you should have a pretty good idea if the seminar business is really for you. You will also have a great foundation on which to start your new career. If you would like to know how to find clients and set yourself up for business success, please see some of the business articles elsewhere on this site.

Starting a seminar business is not for everyone. But if you have the right skill and personality, you can make good money teaching people what you know. Give the seminar business a try and watch your self-employed dreams come true.
