How to Get Started Working from Home

So you want to work from home. The idea sounds great, but how do you get started? This article will show you what to do, and when you need to do it.

What’s the Big Idea?

Some of you know the answer to this question. If so, skip right down to the next subheading. For the rest of you, click here for some ideas or go to the library and pick up a book on home-based business ideas. Page through it and see if any of the ideas sound interesting. You will be living and breathing your chosen business for quite some time. Make sure you will enjoy it over the long run.

Check Your Zoning

Once you’ve settled on a business, you need to figure out if you can run that type of business from your home. If you are operating a business that doesn’t involve added traffic to and from your home (i.e. clients visiting, products being delivered) then you can probably run the business from your home.

If you will add more traffic to your block, then you may run into zoning problems. If an area is zoned residential, that means it is intended for living only. If an area is zoned commercial, that means you run businesses there. Depending on your city, there can be some leniency for home based businesses. Even if you get an okay from the city, you have to be careful.

The city can revoke your permission without notice. This generally happens when your neighbors complain because you’re taking up the available parking or making too much noise. Check with your city to find out what the restrictions are on home based businesses in your neighborhood.

Select a Business Entity

This refers to the way your business is structured. For an in-depth overview of the different types of business structures, go to:

SBA

Most small businesses start off as sole proprietors because it has the least paperwork and is the most inexpensive. The form of business you choose depends on the type of business you run. Consider your choices carefully.

Make it Legal

Once you know the type of business entity you will use, it’s time to choose a name and get a business license. Your licensing requirements vary by state, but in general the whole process should cost less than $200. Have a couple of business names on hand in case your first business name is taken. A good way to find out if someone has your business name is to type it into your web browser and add .com at the end. See if a website comes up. This won’t guarantee that the name is free, but it’s a start.

If you do these three things, you will be in business. It is quick, easy, and inexpensive to start a home based business the right way. With a little effort you will have a legal business that is ready to earn some good money. Good luck.
