Once you’ve settled on a business, you need to figure out if you can run that type of business from your home. If you will add more traffic to your block, then you may run into zoning problems. If an area is zoned residential, that means it is intended for living only. Once you know the type of business entity you will use, it’s time to choose a name and get a business license. Your licensing requirements vary by state, but in general the whole process should cost less than $200. Have a couple of business names on hand in case your first business name is taken. A good way to find out if someone has your business name is to type it into your web browser and add .com at the end. See if a website comes up. This won’t guarantee that the name is free, but it’s a start.
