Home Based Business Tax Tips

Tax Tips for the Home Based Business

Everybody knows about the tax man. If you live in the USA, you know that, come April 15th, you need to send in your income tax forms to Uncle Sam. But when you open your own business, you have other tax issues you need to worry about. This article will point to some of the common mistakes new home based business persons make.

Not Just April

When you are an employee, you pay your income taxes once a year. When you open your own business, all of that changes. Uncle Sam wants your income taxes quarterly. This means you need to send in your estimated taxes every three months.

Basically, you give Uncle Sam a certain amount of money based on how much profit you think you will make in that quarter. See your local Small Business Association or the IRS for more information on how to do this.

Keep Track of Your Expenses

Money that you spend on legitimate business expenses is tax deductible. Keep track of every penny and save all of your receipts. If the IRS questions some of your deductions, you want to be able to prove that the expense is legitimate.

Pay Uncle Sam First

No one wants to get to the end of the quarter and find that they owe Uncle Sam several thousand dollars in taxes. Every time you earn money, take out 25-35% and put it in a separate account. Do this every time, and DON’T TOUCH THE MONEY. It is far better to get to the end of the quarter or year and find that you don’t have to pay as much as you thought than the other way around.

Don’t Over Pay

Again, keep track of how much you make and how much you spend on your business. You don’t want to give Uncle Sam more money that he should get. Even if you get a return at the end of the year, the government is holding onto money you could put in a high-interest account.

Get Expert Help

A professional tax person doesn’t cost very much and can save you a world of headaches. Consider using a professional that has small business experience the first year you make money. Then, if you decide to do it yourself later, you will be starting on a firm foundation.

Paying your taxes doesn’t have to be a painful experience. If you follow these tips, read up on the subject on the above websites, and use an expert, you will get through the process quite easily.
